This remix album of Boom One Sound System’s “Japanese Translations in DUB” is sure to boggle your mind. Participation from artists including Kontur, GInza, Righteous Dub, Piper Street Sound, Dubsmith and Pericles, “The Japanese Remixes” album epitomizes what remixes should be. Various styles are prevalent throughout the release. Sakura (The Samurai Remix) is a dubstep vibe celebrating the Japanese cherry blossoms by Kontur, and it subs out ya chest. Yagi Bushi (Tokyo Dubstep Remix) by Ginza is another massive dubstep track sure to boom your speakers. Koto (D.C. to Yokohama Remix), brought to you by Righteous Dub, is a re-dubulous rendering of the original BOSS track featuring the delays and reverbs of classic dub styles. Haiku (Basho Meets The Praying Mantis Remix) is a Dubsmith riddim which explores the haiku of the great poet Matsuo Bashō, dubwise and otherwise. Yagi Bushi (Shogun en Bogota Remix) from Piper Street Sound is a Cumbia Dub fusion song which features sweet Cumbia percussion throughout. Finally, with Koto (Ancient Camel Rider Remix) from Pericles, he lets us hear what the ancient camel riders must have heard in his head while he crossed the Japanese landscape late in the night. Boom One Sound System has collaborated graciously with these brilliant artists to bring us yet another installment of transnational transcultural dub an’ tings!
Boom One Sound System (BOSS) is Dub, Roots, and Culture with a conscious aroma and a rhythmic flavor. BOSS is an American group of songwriters, beat creators, and entertainers out of NC. Boom One’s original music includes hints of reggae, soul, glitch and grime but dub is foundation. Fusing the elements of “dope rhymes, dope beats” from hip-hop, heavy bass lines and synthesizing rhythms from electronica music with influences from world music and current events, BOSS has developed an original sound that is all their own. Boom One combines technology with the organic undertones of life in order to capture a new form of music dubbed “future roots.”
